Complementary and alternative medicine refers to medical practices that are outside the standard treatments and medical care. However, these treatments are often used alongside standard medicine. There are many types of complementary medicine, most of those that have come down from various traditional practices. Traditional Medicine

Traditional alternative medicine includes practices that more widely accepted than other types of complementary medicine. These are also practicing that have been there for centuries before and been passed down from generations.

These types of treatment methods are also known as whole medical systems; they have a defined philosophy and come with the explanation to the disease, a diagnosis and a therapy treatment.

Body

The body treatment refers to healing by touch. This practice is based on the idea that illness or injury suffered by one part of the body affects the rest of the body as well. Therefore, treatments like these focus on manipulating the body back to optimum health so that it can fully focus on healing the injured area.

This is done through treatment methods such as osteopathic and chiropracticmedicine, massage, body movement therapies, Tai chi and Yoga. Mind-Body Medicine

In this practice it is believed that the mental and emotional health has a direct effect on the physical health of a person. This practice uses behavioural, psychological, social, and spiritual techniques to improve the ability of the mind to cure physical ailments.

These practices are also becoming more and more popular due to the increasing evidence of the mind-body medicine and its effectiveness. Some of the techniques used in mind-body medicinal treatment are Biofeedback, guided imagery, hypnotherapy, meditation and mindfulness and relaxation. These treatments are often used to treat conditions such as chronic pains, coronary artery disease as well as insomnia.

Diet and Herbs

The kind of nutrients that we consume is another thing that determines our health. Excess of nutrients or lack of it is often the cause behind some of the most common diseases in the world today. Through dietary changes and herbal additions, this treatment method attempts to balance the level of nutrients in our body.
